Thoughts on Last Night
Wow. I can't believe it. I still can't believe it. I was glued to the TV all night and all morning. I really need sleep. Even as an independent, I have to say watching Obama's speech was one of the great moments of my life. He is incredibly inspiring. What is his secret? I think part of it, for me, is his contrast to GWB. GWB's own biographers admit that he is not a self-examining, listening type, which happen to be Obama's strengths. People are talking about him like he's Jesus, and obviously they will be disappointed. But for those who are old enough (only 30!) to remember presidents (Republicans and Democrats) who were deliberative, thoughtful, and intelligent, and who sought the opinion of experts regardless of party, this will be a welcome reintroduction of those qualities. I keep forgetting there are many young people who think an administration of extreme secrecy who serves only its own party is the norm. And I truly don't mean that in a Republican-bashing way. I'm criticizing the Bush administration, not the Republican party as a whole, even though they share the responsibility of electing him a second time. (Although Kerry was not very awe-inspiring, it's true)
Of course this is the honeymoon period and there will be a reality check soon, especially with the mess he's inheriting. But early reports are encouraging: one of his top priorities in picking a cabinet is bipartisanship. To not surround himself with yes men. Music to my ears.
I remember in 2004 getting emails either implying or downright stating that this was the most important election ever and that God wanted George W. Bush to be president. Now I'm thinking that might have been true because had Kerry won in 2004, Obama would not have won in 2008. The Lord works in mysterious ways.
(For any of you who won't get the last part, I'm JOKING. I do NOT think God endorses political candidates or parties. It's just fun to tease people who think that.)

Yeah. It's too bad though that we can't seem to elect an awe inspiring candidate that also shares my political views. Then I could be truly excited for America.
hahaha. I loved your last paragraph.
Uh, I re-read my post and I don't see any talking points, except maybe "serving its own party is the norm." Whereas your comment is rife with them. You forgot to mention he's a socialist. But I do appreciate your comments. You always keep me thinking, except you ALWAYS attribute things to me I do not say or believe!
I specifically said he's NOT Jesus. I don't agree with everything Obama believes, but I love the potential of a deliberative mind and cabinet solving our problems. Listening to Obama's speech was amazing because he is an incredible orator, a change for the better, and I was witnessing history. NOT because I want to have his babies.
And I'm sure by your comment you didn't mean that because it's the greatest country on the planet that we don't have to fix A LOT. That would be ridiculous. And of course the Democrats are responsible for the economic crisis because greed isn't at all universal. (I actually hadn't heard that last "fact" before.)
Audrey, I think ironically Obama is more moderate than Bush's administration. Obama actually hijacked some of the conservative platform by talking about fiscal responsibility and cutting programs. Even Karl Rove said that he ran a "moderate right" campaign. Obama's too smart to then alienate his broad appeal by running a far left administration.
Loved the last paragraph also. I'm looking forward to seeing what our new president will do!
I just heard Obama on TV saying we need a “stimulus package.” That sounds novel! Or maybe it is exactly the same as president remember :)
VERY interesting points. Thanks for being respectful. I think we could both stand to bring it on down a couple notches and just WAIT until he is president to see if he sucks or not :)
Those aren't talking points, but I agree they are overused words: I should have said, "good speaker," "a different president than before," and "seeing something that has never happened before." Much better!
I've been asked to remove some of these comments. It was NOT my idea and I'm not trying to censor anyone. I welcome different points of view and enjoy the discussion.
The only political issue God takes a stand on is gay marriage . . . oh . . wait.
The church doesn't take political stands, except when it does.
I wish you didn't remove those comments, it sounds like there was a little bit of conflict. Perhaps a little moral indignation-- how entertaining.
I have to say that I agree with you 100% about what an amazing speech it was. Truly a great moment. Hooray for hope!
I removed the comments per the request of the poster because Scott "outed" him. I knew he wanted to remain anonymous but Scott didn't. So blame him!
